Stellenbosch Public Art Network (SPAN)

SOST (Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust) is a non-profit organisation that brings contemporary art to a broad audience in Stellenbosch by exhibiting outdoor sculptural exhibitions for free within an urban context. The purpose of this brief was to rebrand the organisation to Stellenbosch Public Art Network (SPAN) and to create an integrated campaign which promotes a more diverse range of public art installations that the organisation has expanded on, which includes sound installations, murals, performance and film.

Expansion through dispersion was my core concept for this project. By using biomimicry, as a strong influence, I was inspired by the Starling murmurations and patterns. The way in which starlings disperse and murmur through space inspired me to establish the dynamic identity. This is represented through the dispersion of the various art pieces throughout Stellenbosch, the movement of people and their evolving perceptions. Starlings are constantly in flight and changing pattern, which reinforces SPANS vision for their ever-changing, expanding and diverse exhibitions.
The concept of dispersion and murmuration evolved a dynamic logo form. When placed in a digital format, the logo mimics the motion of murmurations and this is reflected in the form of a GIF.
A scrolling website has been designed for the SPAN identity, which allows for less complications and a better user experience. The home page is the start of the scrolling page, allowing for the user to engage with all the necessary information the organization communicates, however the user can expand the section, if they desire more information about anything specific.

The application is the primary form of connection to the SPAN integrated campaign. Participants are able to register, track their experience and seek necessary information regarding the artists and their artworks. Each experience is logged in the app, for future reference.
A complimentary hot beverage is presented to participants when registered  initially. The SPAN map design is placed on the holder, which allows participants to engage with a physical map if they would prefer to engage with the exhibition, without referring to the application.

The Application and the Kiosk are connected to a server. Participants are required to scan their unique code obtained from their app, by the scanning device, which is located next to the coffee holder. This activates the start of the SPAN experience and it automatically links the participant to the SPAN server. There is a map located at the bottom of the Kiosk if participants would like to situate themselves in relation to the exhibition, or if they would prefer to participate without the use of the application.

Located at final point of the exhibition is a captura. Participants get the opportunity to share a photograph to several social media platforms, through the application once they have reached the final point. The hashtag from the photograph shared, automatically links to the captura, which allows for each participant to receive a complimentary photograph that they have taken at the end of the experience with a unique SPAN watermark. Through shares on social media, and physical leave behinds, the intention is to disperse SPAN’S vision and create awareness to the greater Stellenbosch community.
